Beyond Group 1 and Group 2, the state recruits for hundreds of departmental posts every year: Forest Beat Officer and Assistant Beat Officer, Hostel Welfare Officer, Industrial Promotion Officer, Assistant Section Officer, teachers through DSC, and police constables and sub-inspectors.
Most of these examinations use a single objective computer-based test with negative marking, followed by a physical, skill or document verification stage. The syllabus leans on general studies with a strong Andhra Pradesh component plus post-specific subjects.
How it works
Stages
- 1
Objective written or computer-based test
Typically 150 questions in 150 minutes with one-third negative marking for APPSC-conducted exams; department exams vary.
- 2
Post-specific stage
Physical efficiency tests for forest and police posts, demonstration or teaching tests for some education posts, or a skill test.
- 3
Verification and selection
Document and medical verification followed by provisional selection and posting.

Strategy
How to prepare with mock tests
- Read the post's syllabus line by line; departmental papers test a narrower, deeper set of topics than Group exams.
- Physical stages follow the written test closely; start fitness preparation alongside mocks.
- Build Andhra Pradesh-specific notes that you can reuse across several department exams in the same year.
- Attempt full mocks for each post separately; the weightage of general studies versus the subject paper changes the strategy.
